Spending Family Time Getting the House Ready for Winter

One of our favorite family traditions is taking a day, usually about two weeks before Thanksgiving, to get our house ready for winter. Here in the Midwest, it's a pretty important thing to do before the snow starts to set in - especially because you never know when the first snow storm will hit! So this weekend, my husband, the kids, and I will all be taking some time to get the house in shape.
We usually start out by making a big checklist of everything we need to work on, and planning out our plan of attack. After that, we'll head to the store for cleaning supplies and any pieces we might need, and then we go home and set to work. This year, our biggest tasks include trying to shore up the insulation and installing a storm door, because our heating bills last year were outrageous. We'll also probably invest a big in a backup generator, because we had a lot of problems with our electricity going out last year.
After we've finished, we spend the evening together baking Christmas cookies and making a big dinner. Once all the food is ready, we'll sit down together and watch ExpertSatellite television and enjoy the food. With all that hard work done, we'll enjoy ourselves and get ready for the first snow to come around.
