Growing up with Degrassi

Thanks for the guest post by Kristofer Bartlett
Degrassi is a "cult hit" among teenagers in both Canada and the United States. It is not hard to see why, and even I am a fan of the show. Degrassi is set in a Canadian high school, and the main cast are mostly teenagers who are facing the challenges of growing up in a large and problem-ridden world.
Unlike many other teen dramas that I watch on direct tv los angeles, Degrassi takes a stance on many issues from friendship to love to the internet to jobs. For instance, when I was growing up, the internet was a relatively-new way to connect instantly with people from around the world. Social networks did not exist, so I web-surfed forums. Parents were not able to properly teach me how to protect myself, as the internet was new to them as well. Schools were behind in this matter, as the school I went to still used Netscape, and a filter was not in place.
Degrassi ran an episode in which the main character met a stranger on the internet, and began to e-mail and chat with him over the computer. It turns out, it was a dangerous stalker, who had been wanted by the police, and in TV show fashion the main character was not hurt in the end.
That episode of Degrassi helped me protect myself over the internet better, as I now do not tell new people my personal information until I have talked with them for several weeks or even a couple of months. There are plenty of other episodes in which Degrassi is spot on about, but no matter the episode it will remain a favorite teen drama for me.
