Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) VS Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis)
I thought it would be interesting to compare two of the more succesful movie franchises of all time and their detective's.
On one hand you have a wise-cracking, reckless and tough Detroit Detective and on the other hand you have chain-smoking almost alcholic New York City Detective with a habit of breaking the rules to get the bad guy.
'Axel' has starred in three Beverley Hills Cop movies to date, whilst a 4th movie is supposedly in development with Paramount Pictures apparently aiming for a 2009 production start, in time for a 2010 release.

'McClane' has starred in 4 Die Hard films;

4. Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
Looking at it strictly from a Box Office point of view, the Worlwide Box Office takings show's Die Hard has the lead (however this includes $383m for Die Hard 4, so excluding this makes it more even).
Beverley Hills Cop I, II & III - $735m
Die Hard I, II, III & IV - $1,123m
Die Hard I, II, III & IV - $1,123m
Given that Beverley Hills Cop is (in my view) more comedy than action whilst Die Hard is certainly more action than comedy it is then quite hard to compare the two detectives.
The first Beverley Hills Cop Movie was undoubtedly the best but I also like Beverley Hills Cop III as I viewed it more as a comedy (who can forget Serge!!) as an action film!
As for the Die Hard movies, whilst the 1st movie of any franchise is always the one that all subsequent franchise movies are going to be compared to, I did like Die Hard with a Vengeance.
I thought Jeremy Irons did a good job as the bad guy and what's not to like about Samuel L Jaskson coming along for the ride.
If you want to know who I think would win in a fight? Axel or McClean?
Whilst Axel was almost beaten to a pulp in the 3rd film and survived (along with Billy....ahh yes Billy.... he had better be in the 4th one if they do make one!) McClean would get my vote!.
McClean just keeps on getting beating up but still gets back on his feet. A classic case is in DIe Hard with a Vengeance when he gets absolutely pounded by Targo who constantly beats him against some shipping containers. BUT as usual McClean somehow manages to find an edge and defeat Mathias.
So in my view, McClean would beat Axel but Axel would go down fighting!
As to which movie I would prefer to watch?? Hmmmmmm if I had to choose.....I'd choose Beverley Hills Cop III.
